Throughout the '60s and 70's in NYC, a group of artists would gather in each other's apartments for what became known as the HAPPENINGS. Each was set to a "score" — a set of instructions for participation — and featured some very real and very imagined food. They were about being silly, setting up conversation, using your imagination, and gathering to make art with your friends. Some of the famous guests who hosted and attended these events were John Cage, Marcel Duchamp, and it was the scene for the early romance of Yoko Ono and John Lennon. The movement was part of the early days of conceptual art and was dubbed Fluxus.
Here's a sample menu item pulled from Ono's 'Grapefruit': TUNAFISH SANDWICH PIECE
Imagine one thousand suns in the sky at the same time. Let them shine for one hour. Then, let them gradually melt in to the sky. Make one tunafish sandwich and eat.
